Sand Cats of Big Cat Rescue
On
October 23, 2000 Pat Quillen of S.O.S. Care, the leading breeder of small
cat species sent baby Sand Cats to Big Cat Rescue. They were
born on 7/27/00 to Pebbles and Papoose who were the offspring of wild
caught Sand Cats sent here during Desert Storm for their protection. Most
of the known origin Sand Cats in the U.S. are from
these imported Founders who produced well at S.O.S. Care. They have been
sent here as genetic back up and will not be bred at Big Cat Rescue unless their
offspring with cats unrelated to this group can be returned to the wild. We
will not breed for life in cages.
You can Adopt-A-Cat from this page and help feed and care for the animals you love.
Canyon a male Sand Cat and Genie a female Sand Cat
Sand cats are small desert dwelling cats native to northern Africa and the Middle East. They are frequent victims of the illegal pet trade and during the Gulf War were often used for target practice. In an effort to preserve the species, the Saudi government sent eight of these cats to S.O.S. Care, a California-based international cat-conservation organization. Canyon and four littermates, descendents of the original group, were sent to Big Cat Rescue as a genetic back-up in case of disaster at S.O.S. Care. They like to sleep in and under flowerpots and, although rather timid, can be quite fierce at feeding time.
Canyon and Genie are desert dwellers, but they
know the cleansing medicine of the Frog. If you use any of the following
words to describe yourself: tired, overloaded, harried, frustrated, guilty,
nervous, empty or weak then take the Sand Cat's advice and cleanse yourself. Find
ways to replenish your parched body, soul and mind like taking a long, luxurious
bath, a swim in the ocean or deep cleansing breaths. Frog brings new
life with his rain song. Take time to cleanse yourself of any person,
place or thing that doesn't aid you in reaching a state of
renewal and serenity.
Genie chose her name because she wanted to relay to you the secret of the Genie in the bottle. If you trace this legend to its origin you will discover that in the original version there was no limitation on the number of wishes that the Genie would grant and the same is true in your life. The Genie is just a representative of the Universe that is always saying, "Your wish is my command!" The moral in the story is that we must be careful what we wish for because that is exactly what we will get.
There are three steps to getting what you want:
1. You have to ask.
2. The Genie (the Universe, the collective
consciousness, God) will answer based upon the third step:
3. Receiving the gift. To have the gift we seek we must act as if we already have it. Creating the thing or situation we want requires that we visualize it so fully in our mind's eye that we can actually feel the joy of having it. When we imagine that level of appreciation, joy and passion in experiencing it in our mind, as if it were already here, we are co-creating whatever it is that we envisioned. What we experience today is a result of what we were envisioning or thinking about, but what we experience in the future will be a direct result of what we are envisioning now. Start now!
Big Cat Rescue's Sand Cat-A-Tats are 900 square feet of two story tall space designed around trees. They have barrels, platforms and tubeways to run through as well. They have hanging pots to sleep in and pots with holes in them on the floor for added cover. The cages are heavily landscaped with ferns and grasses to give them ample areas in which to hide. The elevation helps the cat feel a little more comfortable about being such tiny creatures.

In the wild the Sand Cat would eat things like lizards and gerbils. These creatures have very small flexible bones. The closest and most economical food source then is baby chicks. These little fur balls can pack away quite a lot too! Each Sand Cat will eat as much as 10-15 baby chicks a day. We buy these day old chicks frozen from a wholesaler. The Sand Cats love them and will eat everything but the feet and beaks.
