Big Cat Rescue's Family of Ocelots
Nirvana
Female Ocelot
Date of Birth: 6/20/94
Nirvana came to Big Cat Rescue from a broker on 7/27/94. He had left her at the vet's office for dead because she was so dehydrated. Nirvana healed because she knows that our bodies are the product of our thoughts. Scientists have proven that we often respond the same to a placebo as we do a medicine because the power to heal is all in our minds. Nirvana shifted her thoughts from being ill to seeing herself enjoying abundant health and she has enjoyed perfect health every day since.
Ocelots were once in great demand as pets thanks to their striking coats and small size. However, as with most exotic cats, their unpredictable nature and propensity for spraying soon changes people’s minds. Many of these once beloved pets end up abandoned, sold to canned hunts or ultimately euthanized. Nirvana was rescued and raised at Big Cat Rescue where she now passes the time climbing trees, catnapping in her man-made cave and spraying the unsuspecting passersby.
PURR-Sistance
Male Ocelot
Date of Birth: 5/25/96
PURRsistance, and his twin sister PURRfection, had to be taken from their mother due to her inexperience at parenting. This little ocelot earned his name, PURRsistance, quite naturally. Despite many illnesses, he continued to survive. He still suffers from terrible allergies that cause him to rub the fur from his face. But, with constant veterinary supervision, he leads the best possible life we can provide. He loves hanging out on the tree branches at the very top of his extra high cat-a-tat. Most people walk right past his cat-a-tat thinking he must be in his den sleeping when, in fact, he is looking down at them the whole time.
PURR-Fection
Female Ocelot
Date of Birth: 5/25/96
PURRfection, and her twin brother PURRsistance, were taken from their mother due to her inexperience at parenting. She is the epitome of the perfect looking ocelot, which explains her name. Her markings are extraordinary and demonstrate why this species was almost hunted out of existence for its fur. She is much more timid than any of the other ocelots at Big Cat Rescue. Amazing Grace recently moved into a cat-a-tat adjacent to PURRsistance. Since Amazing Grace is one of our most vocal, most social, and most pungent ocelots, we’ll soon see what PURRfection thinks about her new neighbor.
Amazing
Grace
Female Ocelot
Date of Birth: 1993
Amazing Grace was reported to be a three-year-old female Ocelot when she arrived, but appears to be very old. She is a very large and impressive Ocelot and has a good temperament. She and Nirvana are the most vocal and love to greet us with their guttural voices. If you listen closely, you will hear her saying that when you have an inspired thought you have to trust it and act on it.
In the place where she lived before they had cats with common walls; meaning that one wall was shared between adjoining cats. When Amazing Grace would rub up against the wire, the cat next to her would bite off little pieces of her ears trying to get a grip on her. She has tiny, ragged stubs of ears left. Her little ears may be ragged, but she can still hear and heed the voice of inspiration.
Zza
Zza
Female Ocelot
Date of Birth: 1/1/97
Zza Zza was born as a result of the pet trade. Her mother was so ardent about cleaning her up when she was born that she bit off her tail instead of her umbilical cord! Zza Zza knows from the Blue Heron that you learn your most valuable lessons from your mistakes though. Whether you think you can or think you can't; either way you are right. Zza Zza is very shy and is happy to have her new big cage where she can climb and stalk and do all the things a busy Ocelot likes to do!
Sultan
Male Ocelot D.O.B. 8/97
Sultan must be is a throw back to some relative far different than his parents who both have a reddish base coat. Sultan's fur is more silver than red, making him Big Cat Rescue's most striking Ocelot.
He is a great climber and spends most of his time in his tree.
He is also a con artist and will beg you to pet and scratch him, but in true Ocelot fashion, will then turn and bite. It doesn't seem to be his intention to hurt anyone as he is just acting playful, but his teeth and claws are like razors.
Sultan has been an active participant in our new operant conditioning programs. He is so food motivated that he has learned many new behaviors very quickly. Once upon a time it was almost impossible to feed him due to him reaching out and acting psycho now he will lay down patiently for his food
