Anita Wolff had contacted Jamie Veronica to ask for permission to use some of her photos and she suggested they contact Carole Baskin about some of the legislative work we are doing. Encyclopedia Britannica devotes an impressive section of their site as a source of information, a call for action, and a stimulus to thought regarding humanity's relationship with the animals with whom we share our planet. They support worldwide efforts to ensure humane treatment of animals, develop the understanding of their nature, promote their survival, and protect and restore the environment. 456  4/20/08 The Tampa Tribune and TBO.com reported on Big Cat Rescue in Earth Day Event Lets Youths Get In Touch With Nature.  The first-time festival includes animal encounters, arts and crafts, live folk and bluegrass music, a nature art show by well-known photographers and artists, a student art exhibit and displays by local organizations including Tampa Audubon Society and Big Cat Rescue.

454  4/10/08 The Tampa Tribune and TBO.com mention Big Cat Rescue again in New Motivational Club Keeps Students Hopping.  Named for Lowry's leopard mascot, the club has gone on fundraising walks for autism and multiple sclerosis, adopted a leopard at Big Cat Rescue, created valentines for veterans, hosted a literacy event and visited nursing home residents.

He quoted Carole Baskin in saying that extremists are making it more difficult for those wanting to help animals to work within the system. 374 7/1/07 St. Pete Times reporter Sarah Rosenbaum quoted Carole Baskin on the impact of the new 10,000 bond requirement as saying  "We think it's been a long time coming." The money will force "roadside zoos and pseudo-sanctuaries" to take more responsibility for their charges.  The law is intended to provide some liability coverage in case an animal endangers others or causes property damage.  This article ran in a dozen or so other media outlets as well. 

373 6/19/07 Tampabay Buccaneer's Quarterback Chris Simms brought kids from the Children's Home to Big Cat Rescue for the second time.  Big Cat Rescue is the only venue the Wild Adventures program will repeat this year mostly because the Buc QB enjoyed it so much the first time around. Simms has been back on his own several times and has told his teammates of the location whenever possible. Last year, he took wide receiver Joey Galloway with him to the sanctuary when Galloway’s parents were in town for a visit. I think Big Cat Rescue is my favorite,” said Simms of the various Wild Adventure stops. “I really enjoy it. It’s a great learning experience.” Read online HERE

364 5/25/07 Katherine Fletcher, reporter forCapital PARENT Magazine, did two stories about Big Cat Rescue.  In one she listed it with San Diego's Wild Animal Park and Canada's Montreal Biodome as best places to visit.  She went on to differential between zoos and sanctuaries and between real sanctuaries, like Big Cat Rescue that do not breed, sell or exploit animals and pseudo sanctuaries that are merely a cover for back yard menageries and road side zoos.

354 3/9/07  Stephen Guilfoyle, Editor of the News & Reporter OnlineChester.com reported that opponents of Tiger World watched a presentation that included a video clip from Big Cat Rescue.  He went on to say, “The spokesman on the video says some of the things that zoology experts have told The News & Reporter about private ownership groups. Jaunakais originally talked about breeding her cats, but the experts said that is a sure test to determine that a group is not into saving or conserving the species.  There are actually too many big cats in private ownership, and there is no need to breed more, the spokesman on the video showed (Brian Czarnik, BOD of Big Cat Rescue). Breeding is a sign that a private owner has other motives than conservation. Others are allowing people to view the animals as well as taking the animals off-site for exhibitions.”

Reporter Philip Bethge wrote about the deaths of Haley Hildebrand, Vince Lowe, Joy Holiday and reported on the mauling of Roy Horn and others.  His report included the sad truth about what often happens to the cats when they escape, when they are killed for doing what comes naturally and how they end up in road side zoos in the care of people who pride themselves on being big game hunters.  He used Gloria Johnson as an example of people who support the white tiger trade so that they can use the animals as props.  Most of the cases cited were in Florida where he spoke with FWCC officials, viewed photos of the people who had been killed, and learned that the state has done little to control the problem.  An English translation is available HERE

293 8/24/06 Investigator Tanya Arja from Fox 13 reported that Lowry Park's training lags others.  The keeper who was left alone to tend the tigers when one escaped and was shot to death had been on the job for less than a month and had been trained to care for tigers only two weeks.  Busch Gardens said they train their tiger keepers for 3 - 9 months.  By stark contrast, Big Cat Rescue requires their keepers to work with the smaller cats, such as bobcats and servals, for a year and a half before they can even apply to work with the big cats and then they must train for another 3 months to a year under direct supervision of someone that is already certified to work with the tigers, lions, leopards and cougars.  The AZA, USDA and FWCC admitted that they do not have any standardized training protocols.

A group called Big Cat Rescue held a tour in Tampa to raise money for animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Guests saw tigers, lions and other wild cats for a $10 donation. Scott Lope, Big Cat Rescue: "We want to take care of the animals too. There's been so many victims of this hurricane and that there's a lot of animals whose owner's homes have been destroyed or their owners have perished so we want to make sure they're taken care of too." Big Cat Rescue is home to more than 150 exotic cats that were abandoned or abused. The non-profit sanctuary has already sent animal supplies to the Gulf Coast.
