Alzheimer's Memory Walk

2006:  This past Saturday, BCR hosted its first Alzheimer's Memory Walk. There were over 600 people who participated in this event. The volunteers worried about everything, from parking to the safety of the guests and the safety of our cats. It went flawlessly. No deaths, no accidents! All went well. Congratulations to Julie Hanan who took on this major event and succeeded in putting it all together. This was a lot of great exposure for the sanctuary.

Julie took some great photos that are playing here: http://www.bigcatrescue.org/Flash/AlzheimersWalk.htm

The Memory Walk was an extremely successful event for the Alzheimer's Association this year at Big Cat Rescue. Financially, they raised more than double the amount they did the previous year and drew in 3- 4 times the number of people they ever thought they would. (That's why we were so overwhelmed with cars we didn't expect) Their committee was so happy with how all of our volunteers and all of our cats handled the deluge. They kept coming up to us saying,"please make sure you thank all of the volunteers that worked so hard for us!" As they were packing up, they were excitedly talking about the possibility of us hosting the Memory Walk again next year. It means so much that each volunteer went out of their way to make this such a special day for them, thank you sometimes just doesn't seem enough to say for all you give of yourselves!

According to Julie: The true hero in this is Scott Lope. Scott handled this project for a year through so many meetings and constant changes in Alzheimer's Association committee members. Believe me, no one expected the turn out this brought. Through it all, Scott was able to calmly direct our volunteers and theirs, park over 250 cars and buses, handle millions of questions, even be our spokesperson and give the opening address to the crowd. All this while running our normal Saturday routine of cleaning sections, four regular tours, overnight guests, Expedition guests, and gift shop mania. For me personally, the best thing he did all day was remind me to just keep taking a deep breath and breathe! Thanks again for all your hard work!
